Reasons to create

According to the Dutch writer J.W. Otten to miss someone is the main reason for writers and artists to create. This is the subject of one of my first posts  MISSEN OP HET EERSTE GEZICHT  (to miss at first sight).
For me to miss someone was an important reason to start with this blog, but as time passed by some other reasons occurred.
But still loss and desire are important themes as well as failure.
That's why my favourite time for photographing is at dusk, in the early night and morning, that is the time when there is this strange and mysterious atmosphere that can give you this feeling which is beyond words.
The calm and strong presence of the trees can give you some comfort as they were here long before us and hopefully they will still be here after us.
It is encouraging to see how they can recover after a storm and how they can survive in difficult conditions.
Even if they're dead or dying they still have their dignity, as it is possible for them to die when they are still standing up. And in this process they are still feeding a lot of other creatures.

As I experienced during my life and especially the last few years by working with people, men can also have this strength to live on after storms in their lifetime. This is the atmosphere that I wish to create in my portraits.

The changing cityscape is also a subject in my work as you can see in my photographs of Arnhem Central Station. I feel the need to photograph this, because it is in my own city and I feel involved.
Lately I have made a seperate blog for these photographs which you can find at ARNHEM CENTRAL

When I started this blog I wrote in Dutch, but later I changed it into English. Some parts will remain in Dutch, especially the poems.
The photographs on this blog are not always recent, sometimes I use photographs from my archive, if that's the case I usually mention the date.

You can navigate through this blog by using the labels (Themes and places) or the archive both on the right side. On top you can find the pages with complete series.
If you click on a photograph you can enlarge it.
